Quran
O you who have believed, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous. (al-Baqarah 183)
Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Begin the fast when you see it (the new moon) and end the fast when you see the next one, and if the sky is cloudy, then complete thirty days.”
Dua before beginning the fast
Nawaytu an asuma sawma shahri Ramadana minal fajri ilal maghribi khalisan lillahi ta'ala.
Meaning: I intend to keep the obligatory fast from dawn until sunset, sincerely for the sake of Allah the Almighty
Dua for breaking the fast
Allahumma laka sumtu, wa bika amantu, wa 'alayka tawakkaltu, wa 'ala rizqika aftartu, faghfirli ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu
Meaning: O Allah, for You I fasted, in You I believed, upon You I relied, and with Your provision I broke my fast. O Forgiving One, forgive my past and future sins
